Past Greats
Charlie Barber
Charlie 'Ali' Barber represented HCC during the late 80's and early 90's,
and will be forever immortalised in Hanslope folklore by his infamous league
debut, where he was affectionately re christened 'Ali Baba and his forty
wides'.
Nonetheless such was the dearth of spin-bowling during that period, Charlie
was a regular member of both the league and friendly sides. At best his
off-spin bowling was "tidy", at worst "experimental". Bowling a slow, slow,
quick, quick slow, nagging length he provided a more than useful distraction
to the ubiquitous Hanslope seam attack.
When Charlie was bowling however, it became customary for Captains to punish
disobedience by banishing players to the deep square leg boundary or use it
as opportunity to assess the fielding capabilities of some young debutant.
A handy low order batsmen and consistent fielder, Charlie epitomised the
whole hearted team player, providing on his day genuine all round match
winning performances. A terrific post match raconteur, he will be fondly
remembered as the man who once threatened to play his violin before, during
and after matches.By "The Colonel"
