Past Greats
Don Cook
A gutsy right hand opening batsmen and occasional off-spin bowler, Don 'The'
Cook was renowned for his studious, and rather uneventful batsmanship.
Never one to transmit his test style (circa 1974) batting to the one day
arena, he consistently guaranteed the side at least 32 runs after 45 overs.
Critics observed that a change in bat from his trusty Gray Nicholls 'Balsa'
would perhaps accelerate his run rate, but nevertheless like the great Don
himself, he became a reliable and consistent performer.
An eccentric and often unnoticed prowler in the field, he had a sure pair of
hands and was the godfather of the 'Blakey' style of fielding. Always a
caring individual he once famously ignored Trevor McLean's field changes,
and the plight of his team mates to rescue and return a colony of wayward
frogs to the mid wicket boundary. Perhaps no other Hanslope Cricketer before
or since, has so crucially been involved in the Frog Reproduction Cycle.
